The major highlight of this trek is to reach up to Laya (3,850 meters), one of the highest settlements in Bhutan, situated at the foot of Mt. Masa Gang (7,200 meters / 23,620 feet). From Punakha, the trail follows the Mo-Chu River through hot springs and the fortress at Gasa Dzong, the district center, via different types of landscapes and vegetation before reaching the village of Laya. En route, we will pass through picturesque valleys, passes, and villages along with the wilderness and rich flora –fauna.  This trek will be one of the most memorable life experiences.

Flying over the dragon kingdom and landing at Paro international airport that is in the magnificent valley and home to monasteries and temples, Chomolhari and Jitchu Drake peak. Then you will be welcomed upon your arrival.

Taktsang or the tiger’s nest temple is the most revered temple to the Buddhist. This magical temple clings to a vertical granite cliff 800m above the valley. Legend has it that in the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche, a tantric master flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave around which the temple is built. A hike to this temple will take up most of our morning. In the afternoon, we will host a special Buddhist prayer ceremony at the beautiful 1200-year-old Kyichu Lhakhang Temple, to bring us good luck for the rest of the journey.

Today is the start of your trekking. After breakfast, we travel to Drugyal Dzong where you'll meet the trekking crew and start your trek. After 4 hours of ascending and descending, you will reach the army post at Gunitsawa village. At the army check-post, your trek permit will be checked and endorsed. The campsite is on the opposite side of the river, not far from Gunitsawa.

Today, we have an early start as we have to ascend 700 meters and is a long trek. After breakfast, leaving Shana the trail continues upriver through the forest of rhododendron and blue pine. When we enter Jigme Dorji National Park keep your eyes open for wildlife and changes in vegetation as we continue to climb in elevation. If the weather is clear, you can catch the glimpse of Mount Jomolhari.

After breakfast, we cross an army post and leave the tree line as we head into the high mountains and enjoy a spectacular view of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. After some time, we cross Tengethang, a winter home of the migratory yak herders and the herder’s homes become a regular feature of the landscape. Arriving at Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites of the Himalayas, we can watch the sunset on Mt. Jhomolhari (7314 m) and Mt. Jichu Drake (6989 m).

We continue our trail after having breakfast. The trail gradually ascends as we reach Nyili La Pass at 4,870m, the first of many major passes. From here, you will have spectacular views of Mt. Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherimgang. The Nyile La pass at 4890m is about a four-hour ascent. As we trek ahead, one can witness vast yak pastures and yak herder’s tent made from yak wool. As you come down into the Lingshi basin, you get a wonderful view of Lingshi Dzong on a clear day.

Today, we take our time as it is a short walking. In the morning, we'll visit Lingshi Dzong, also known as Yugyel Dzong in the 17th century, which sits right atop a ridge. After arriving at Chebisa campsite, feel free to roam around the area.

Continuing our trail, we pass through wide pastureland and reach the Gombu La pass at 4350m. Then we descend into a rhododendron filled valley and continue past some yak herder camps to Shakshepasa where we camp.

Today is a little strenuous journey as we have to ascent about 700 m. We have an early start and get us on the trail to Jhari La pass at 4747 m and descend to Tsharijathang, where the valley has been declared a Takin sanctuary and herds of Takin (the national animal of Bhutan) normally can be seen. From here we climb to our camp at Robluthang at 4160 m.

We have an early start today as well as we have a strenuous hike ahead of us leading to the Shinge La pass at 5005 m. As we descend to Lemithang we’ll see Mt. Gangchenta (6840 m), the glacially carved Gangchhenta valley, stone houses, Laya women dressed in typical Laya costume with long pointed bamboo hats on their head.

After breakfast, continue our trail along a narrow winding river valley, leads you to the west side of Laya village. Climbing up out of the forests we will be rewarded with some great views of Gangchhenta and Masang Gang (7165 m) mountains and finally reach the village.

Today we have a relaxing day as we set off to hot spring in Gasa Tshachu, which is one of the most popular hot springs in Bhutan. Due to their well-known curative powers, the hot springs are very popular amongst the Bhutanese from all walks of life including tourists. The place might be quite crowded especially in December.

It is the last day of the trekking. We begin our last day as we pass through hills and passes, pine and oak forests and villages, and wheat fields. You will also see a beautiful view of the Gasa Dzong glued to the valley wall as if floating in space. Our car will be waiting in Damji and transfer you to Punakha traveling through the high agricultural benches above the Mochhu River into a lush semi-tropical gorge filled with banana trees, creepers, and diverse tropical vegetation until Tashithang and continue driving to Punakha.

Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until the 1950s. Today, the central monk body moves to Punakha in the winter when it gets too cold in Thimphu. With a climate almost tropical in the summer, the valley is blessed with an abundance of fruits and rice. We will visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong. After the Dzong, we will drive to the capital, Thimphu, over the Dochu La pass (3000 m).

Today, you'aa explore the Thimphu city starting with the National Memorial Chorten, built-in memory of the third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Next, is Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point) offering a panoramic view overlooking the Thimphu valley and Mini Zoo for Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. After lunch, visit the Centenary Farmer’s Market and later drive to Paro.
