Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome to Kathmandu, Nepal! Upon your arrival, an Asian Heritage Treks & Travel representative will greet you at the airport with your nameplate. You will then be promptly transferred to the hotel. En route to the hotel, you will pass by the Open Cremation Place (Pashupatinath Temple), the Royal Palace Museum, known as Narayanhity, and the Garden of Dreams before arriving in Thamel. Your hotel will be located downtown in the Touristic Hub. Our representative will assist you and go over your travel itinerary. You’ll have ample time to explore the streets of Thamel.

Day 2Sightseeing in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, our tour guide will pick you up along with the driver and a vehicle. Firstly, you will visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can admire the typical wood-carved temples and buildings reflecting the ancient Kathmandu city. Following that, we shall head towards Swyambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Kathmandu city. Next, you will explore the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the biggest pilgrimage sites for Hindu devotees in Southeast Asia. Additionally, we can visit another nearby pilgrimage site, Guweyswori Temple. Lastly, our itinerary will take us to Boudhanath Stupa, another UNESCO World Heritage site. This Stupa, constructed in 600 A.D., is a unique symbol of Buddhism worldwide. We will thoroughly explore the area around Boudhanath Stupa. Once we have completed our sightseeing tour, you can return to the hotel and relax.

Day 3Fly to Lhasa (3,650 m)

On the third day of the Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan Highlights Tour, you will take a flight to Lhasa. Upon your arrival, our Tibet agent will warmly welcome you at Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA). You will then be transferred to your hotel by a private vehicle. Lhasa is located on the north bank of the Kyi-chu River, known as the “Place of the Gods” in Tibet. Spend the rest of the day allowing your body to acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Day 4Lhasa Sightseeing: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street

Begin your exploration of Lhasa, visiting the beautiful Potala Palace (UNESCO World cultural Heritage site) and Norbulingka Palaces. They are better known as the Winter Palace and Summer Palace, respectively. You can explore its audience halls, the jewelled and Golden burial chortens (stupa Tombs) of past Dalai Lamas, and a tremendous number of Buddhist frescoes, Thangkas, combinations of Mandala, etc.
Then, you will head to the holiest temple in Tibet, the Jokhang Temple, built during Songsten Gampo’s reign by Princess Wencheng of the Tang dynasty, 647 A.D. Here you can observe sincere pilgrims making prostration in front of Jokhang Temple. While entering the temple, you can see the holiest statue of Buddha. Around the monastery is the famous Barkhor Street, where you can do the kora with pilgrims and locals. You’ll taste Tibetan tea with locals in the tea house.

Day 5Lhasa Tour - Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery

In the morning, you’ll explore the largest monastery in Tibet, Drepung Monastery, situated at the foot of Gambo Utse Mountain, and it was once the home to over 10,000 monks. As you walk through Coqen Hall, your guide will provide detailed explanations of the worldview of Tibetan Buddhism and introduce notable figures in Tibetan Buddhist history.

After having your lunch in the afternoon, you’ll head to Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419 by Tsongkapa’s disciple Jamchen Choeje. It is another ‘great three’ Gelug monasteries of Tibet. Your guide will explain how Tibetan monks engage in these debates to acquire knowledge and advance in their academic degrees. Besides, you can also see the colourful Rock Painting of Buddha and the three sand Mandala.

Day 6Drive from Lhasa to Shigatse (3,900 m) (5-6-hour travel)

On the sixth day of the Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan Highlights Tour, you will drive from Lhasa to Shigatse. En route, you’ll pass over the Gampala pass (4790 m) and get a chance to catch a glimpse of Yamdrok-Tso Lake (4400 m), surrounded by numerous snow-capped mountains, offering spectacular views of Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar (7191 m), the highest peak near Lhasa. Further along the way, we’ll pass by the Korola Glacier on the roadside. At Manak Dam Lake, you’ll have the opportunity to hang prayer flags at Simila Mountain Pass. Continuing our journey, we will reach Gyantse, historically Tibet’s third-largest city (following Lhasa and Shigatse). In Gyantse, we’ll explore the famous Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum while enjoying a panoramic view of Gyangtse Fortress. After some time, we’ll finally arrive in Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet. You will spend the night in Shigatse.

Day 7Drive back to Lasha via Gyantse

Today, on the seventh day of the Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan Highlights Tour, we’ll drive back to Lhasa via Gyantse, where you can stand on the viewing platform and admire the vast Yalong Riverbed. Upon arriving in Lhasa, check into your hotel and take some time to rest.

Day 8Lhasa to Kathmandu

During the eighth day of the Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan Highlights Tour, a flight will take you from Lhasa to Kathmandu. While en route, you’ll have the opportunity to behold the majestic mountains from high above in the sky and savor the deep blue expanse adorned with cotton clouds. Upon your arrival at the airport, our representative will be there to greet you and provide transportation to your hotel.

Day 9Sightseeing in Patan and Bhaktapur.

Today, you will explore two ancient cities near Kathmandu: Patan and Bhaktapur.

In Patan, your itinerary includes visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Krishna Temple and Patan Durbar Square. Next, explore the Patan Museum to delve deeper into the history of this city and the reign of its kings. Then, proceed to the Golden Temple, a significant attraction for both Hindus and Buddhists, as well as the Banglamukhi Temple.

After visiting Patan, you will head towards Bhaktapur; it is the city that was the capital of the Greater Malla Kingdom until the 15th century. Bhaktapur is a treasure trove of artistic creations displayed in the temples and monuments of the city. Now this square is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is managed by the Archaeological Department of Nepal and the Bhaktapur municipality. Bhaktapur is known as the most ancient city. Durbar Square used to be the home of the royal families. There are basically four different squares: Taumadhi Square, Durbar Square, Pottery Square, and Dattatreya Square. You’ll explore the ancient architecture, intricate woodwork, and vibrant culture of Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Nyatapola Temple, Bhairavnath Temple, the statue of King Bhupatindra Malla, Peacock Window, Golden Gate, fifty-five windowed palace, Taleju bell, Dattatreya temple, Vatsala Temple, and Chyasilin Mandap are the major attractions of Bhaktapur.

After completing your sightseeing, return to Kathmandu and enjoy some well-deserved rest.

Day 10Flight to Paro and Drive to Thimphu (2300 m) (2.5-our drive)

Your experience of this enchanting kingdom begins with a flight over the Himalaya into the Paro valley, truly one of life’s most spectacular sights. You will view the world’s highest, most majestic peaks and enjoy the view of the approaching valley with its primeval alpine forests, monasteries, temples, and farmhouses nestled in splendid mountain isolation.
Your Bhutan Visa will then be stamped in your passport on arrival at Paro International Airport. After clearing customs & immigration, your Bhutanese Guide will greet you at the welcome gate and drive to Thimphu.

Later in the afternoon, visit Tashichhodzong, or the fortress of glorious religion, which was built in 1641. The Dzong was later rebuilt by the third king, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, in 1965. Tashichhodzong is Bhutan’s administrative and religious centre and houses the throne room of His Majesty the king, Government ministries, the nation’s largest monastery, and the headquarters of his holiness the Je Khenpo and the monk body. The national assembly hall is located in a new building across the river is a parliament house. Evening free time in Thimphu town.

Day 11Thimphu to Punakha and Sightseeing in Punakha

After breakfast, drive to Punakha (4298 ft.)/ Wangdue, on the way, stop at Dochu-La-Pass (3150 mts.). to view the higher Himalayas. Arrival at Punakha, check in at the hotel. Afternoon visit Punakha Dzong – built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. For many years, until the time of the second king, it served as the seat of the Government. The Dzong was named Druk Pungtang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness). Punakha is still the winter residence of Je-Khenpo, and King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck convened the first National Assembly here in 1952. After that, take a short and easy walk to visit the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest bridges in Bhutan. Evening is free for leisure.

Day 12 Punakha to paro and paro sightseeing

After breakfast, drive to Paro (7,483 ft.) On arrival, check in at the hotel. Afternoon visit Ta Dzong – National Museum with an excellent collection of arts, relics, religious thangkha, etc. Rinpung Dzong – Meaning “fortress of the heap of jewels”. The Dzong now serves as the administrative and judicial seat of Paro. Evening is free for leisure.

Day 13Visit Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)

After breakfast, take a day walk to the ‘Tiger’s Nest’, the sacred Taktshang monastery which clings to the rock face 900 metres above the valley floor. Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown to the site riding on a tigress. He subsequently meditated here for three months. It is one of Bhutan’s most holy sites and draws pilgrims not only from Bhutan but also from neighbouring Buddhist countries. You can have lunch at the Taktshang cafeteria, from where you get a spectacular view of the monastery.

Day 14Flight from Paro to Kathmandu

The Bhutan tour comes to an end today. Depending on your flight schedule, our representative will pick you up with a private vehicle and drop you off at Paro International Airport approximately three hours before your scheduled flight back to Kathmandu.
Upon arrival at Kathmandu airport, our representative will pick you up and bring you to the hotel.

Day 15Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (driving distance: 210 kms. / driving duration: 6/7 hours)

After a delightful breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive to the enchanting city of Pokhara. The journey will take you through picturesque landscapes, with the majestic Himalayas as your backdrop. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you’ll check into your comfortable hotel, where you can unwind and rejuvenate after the road trip. Take in the breathtaking views of Phewa Lake and the Annapurna Range from your accommodation, and perhaps enjoy a leisurely stroll around the serene lakeside.

Day 16Sarangkot Visit and Pokhara Explore

Start your day early with mesmerizing sunrise views from Sarangkot, just a short drive from Pokhara. Wake up before dawn and make your way to the viewpoint for a breathtaking view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges as the sun paints the sky with vibrant hues. After capturing the perfect sunrise shots, return to the Pokhara hotel for breakfast.

After taking some time rest, embark on a city tour to explore Pokhara’s cultural and natural wonders. Visit the serene Phewa Lake, temples like Gupteshwor Mahadev and David’s fall, explore the intriguing International Mountain Museum to learn about the Himalayan expeditions, and wander through the colourful streets of Lakeside, where you can shop for souvenirs and savor the delicious local cuisine. Wrap up your day by watching the sunset over the tranquil Phewa Lake from World Peace Stupa before heading back to your accommodation, making the most of your day in this picturesque Nepalese city.

Day 17 Pokhara to Lumbini (driving distance: 180 kms. / driving duration: 6 hours)

Today you will head towards Lumbini, which is approximately 180 kilometers away. The journey to Lumbini takes you through the scenic countryside of Nepal. You will drive through lush green hills, winding roads, and traditional villages. The road to Lumbini is well-paved, making for a comfortable journey that takes approximately 6-7 hours. Once you reach Lumbini, you will check in at the hotel and take a rest.

Day 18Visit Lumbini and Drive to Chitwan (driving distance: 165 kms / driving duration: 5 hours)

Today you will explore the sacred site where Lord Buddha was born and visit the many monasteries and temples in the area. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world for Buddhists.

After exploring Lumbini, you will drive to Chitwan National Park, which takes approximately 5 hours, depending on the road conditions. Along the way, you will pass through the beautiful countryside of Nepal, seeing traditional villages and scenic landscapes. Once you arrive in Chitwan, you will check in at the hotel and, in the evening, explore the Tharu village and immerse yourself in their captivating traditional dance. Savor the unique tea crafted by the Tharu community in charming clay teapots. Following that, experience the mesmerizing Tharu stick dance and the vibrant Dhaan Naach performance. As the day winds down, bask in the serene beauty of the riverside, where you can catch a glimpse of the local wildlife while enjoying a breathtaking sunset.

Day 19 Activities in Chitwan

Start your full-day sightseeing tour. You’ll embark on a jungle safari by Jeep. Enter the community forest section to observe the one-horned rhino and various other wild animals like wild boar, deer, and leopard.
Afterward, cross the Rapti River to reach the outskirts of the main national park area. If luck is on your side, you might even spot the Royal Bengal Tiger in the highland area, where the bushes can reach up to 6 feet. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to witness wild elephants and other fascinating creatures.
Once you’ve completed your jungle safari, return to the hotel for lunch. Later, take a guided tour of the Tharu village and enjoy a canoeing adventure on the Rapti River. Here, you can observe the Marsh Mugger and Gharial crocodiles resting by the banks of the Rapti River in Chitwan.

Day 20 Chitwan – Kathmandu (4-5-hour drive)

You can also rest in the hotel and pack your bags, as this is the last day before you leave for your destination the following day. This marks the end of the Nepal-Bhutan Highlights Tour.

Day 21 Departure
