Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek- Kanchenjunga Mountain is the third-highest mountain in the world and it is one of the best trekking destinations for trekkers who love adventure and are daredevils. Kanchenjunga trekking routes have been hardly explored and remain one of Nepal’s most isolated trekking regions. There’s a belief from the native area that Kanchenjunga Mountain is the home to Yeti – the snowman. Along with that, the Kanchenjunga region provides a vivid diversity of flora and fauna. It is home to the Impedance Pheasant, Red-billed blue magpie, shy dragon, and snow leopard along with amphibians and mammals. Kanchenjunga conservation area is playing a crucial role in protecting this animal in this region. If you truly want to indulge yourself in nature and love challenges then this trek is for you. The route to Kanchenjunga Base Camp passes through the Arun Valley which is considered one of the most beautiful regions for trekking in Nepal, and one of the highlights is the Kanchenjunga Conservation area which covers an area of 2035 square kilometers. This walk-around Mount Kanchenjunga visits both the North and South Base Camps. The route of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek begins by approaching the North side of Kanchenjunga where you will have great views of Tent Peak, Nepal Peak, and Cross Peak before the bulk of Kanchenjunga becomes visible. From Pangpema on the north side the trek returns to Ghunsa and then crosses Mirgin La pass over to the south side of Kanchenjunga. Once over this pass, you follow the route through Ramche and Oktang where there are impressive views of the South West face of Kanchenjunga.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and is followed by a Bus drive to Taplejung. The tour goes through the villages Taplejung, Chhirwa, Sekathum, Gyabla, Ghunsa, Khambachen, Lhonak, Ghunsa, Selele, Tseram, Ramche, Torongten, Sherpa gain, Phumpe Dada, Kade bhanjyang, Lali Kharka, and Suketar, from where you take a drive to Biratnagar and next day flight back to Kathmandu. The trek takes you on a day trip to Kanchenjunga Base Camp and a day trip to Oktang temple, where you can also visit the impressive glacier.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu

After arriving in Kathmandu, our office representative will pick you up from the airport and will welcome, assist, and transfer you to the hotel. In the afternoon, you may rest as you might be having Jet Lag, and later on, visit the Asian Heritage office to get more insights about your trek. Furthermore, you can stroll around the local streets of Thamel and explore the city.

Day 2 Trek preparations Day

Today is the free day before the long hike to Kanchenjunga Base Camp. We will meet you at your hotel and take your original passports and two copies of photos for permit preparation. In the evening we will bring you to our office and introduce you to the trekking guide. If you need any equipment for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek to buy or rent, your guide can assist you.

Day 3 Flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar (80 m), Flight duration: 40mins.

After breakfast, our office representative will come to receive you at the hotel and they will transfer you to the airport. The flight will take around 40 minutes to reach Biratnagar. Upon arrival, meet our office representative at the airport and they will assist and transfer you to the hotel. Check-in at the hotel and have some rest. Later on, you can stroll around Biratnagar and explore the streets for a while.

Day 4 Drive to Taplejung (2420m), Driving duration: 8 to 9 hours

Have your breakfast In Biratnagar before you leave for Taplejung. On your fourth day of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, you will be traveling with the local bus all the way to the Taplejung which will somewhere between 8 and 9 hours to reach. The bus will stop on the way for a short break and for lunch so you can have your lunch at that time. It’s a long journey today so lay back and relax or interact with the other people traveling on the bus as well. Upon arrival in Taplejung, check in to the lodge and have some rest.

Day 5Taplejung to Chhirwa (1185m) Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

Your trail from Taplejung descends until it reaches Chhirwa. Today, the path will be taking you mostly downhill while passing the pastures land and small villages on your way. Your trek guide will indicate short breaks throughout the trek as today is a tough hiking day. Somewhere along the way, you will be having your lunch. Observe the Hungdewa River and the raging Tamur River and after some gradual upward walking, you will start descending down to Sinwa village. From there, we continued to Tawa before crossing the suspension bridge at Thiwa. As you keep on walking you will realize the unfolding of nature’s vistas and after some gradual walk, you’ll reach today’s final destination Chhirwa. Chhirwa is a small Limbu village with some local lodges, check in to the lodge and have a sound rest as you might be tired of today’s hike

Day 6 Chhirwa to Sekathum (1650m) Hiking duration: 5 to 6 hours

You will start your trek through a few forested ridges with lush green vegetation. Today your path will be taking you through the side of the Tamur River until you arrive at the Olangchung Gola. This is the entry point of the Kanchenjunga National Park and from here you will be ascending up for a while before descending again to you cross Ghunsa Khola. After a decent half-hour walk, you will arrive in Sekathum where we will stay overnight.

Day 7 Sekathum to Amjilossa (2510m) Hiking duration: 5 to 6 hours

Another day after having your breakfast follow a steep and narrow trail, up the north bank of the Ghunsa Khola to the Tibetan village of Amjilossa.

Day 8 Amjilossa to Gyabla (2725m) Hiking duration: 8 to 9 hours

You will head towards Gyabla. Have a decent walk and cross the river before you start to ascend the steep and narrow trail. After crossing it you will descend all the way down to cross the river again and then you will be gradually walking up from the gorge’s bottom to pass by Solima and slowly descend down to the riverside. You need to hike carefully today as you will be walking through the gorge using a steep and narrow trail. Hike up for a while and leave the riverside behind to pass through dense bamboo, fir, and rhododendron forests. Then, you will pass a small stone house by the side of a river before gradually walking up over small bridges. The route makes numerous steep climbs and short descents and passes a beautiful large waterfall before the final steep climb up to Gyabla. It is a small Tibetan settlement.

Day 9 Gyabla to Ghunsa (3415m) Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

You will start your trek to Ghunsa, At first you will descend down to the riverside and continue to walk gradually. Soon, the valley will slowly open up before you arrive at a place called Phole. After a couple of hours of more trekking, you will reach the famous Sherpa village where you can observe the hydroelectric plant. Today you will be staying in Ghunsa as you need to acclimatize yourself.

Day 10 Rest day in Ghunsa

Today is a rest day for you during the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, it’s necessary to acclimatize with the surroundings in order to keep fit on the trails that follow. Have a short hike to the Buddhist monastery and explore the surroundings, you can hike towards the Lapsan La through lush green forest and then get back to Ghunsa and have some rest.

Day 11 Ghunsa to Khambachen (4145m) Hiking duration: 5 to 6 hours

Start your trek towards Khambachen. Today you will trek further north along the riverside, after a gradual walk along the riverside you will start to ascend through the high land trees and vegetation, cross the bridge at Rampuk Kharka, and continue your hike passing the waterfall. Get ready to cross the narrow and steep section of the landslide area to be welcomed by the views of Jannu. After some more trekking, you’ll reach Khambachen, where you can check in to the lodge and rest.

Day 12 Khambachen to Lhonak (4792m) Hiking duration: 3 to 4 hours

You will head towards Lhonak. Today your trail will lead you through rocky fields and many impressive boulders can be seen on the hillside. The trek follows the river bank and soon you will reach another magnificent waterfall. Walkthrough the waterfall area and cross the bridge to Ramtang, The upcoming path is a bit steep and narrow due to the landslide so be careful while using this trail. After this tough but beautiful trail, we will reach Lhonak.

DAY 13 Hike to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5140 m) and back to Lhonak, Hiking duration: 7 to 8 hours

Start your trek towards the Kanchenjunga Base Camp. This will be the highest elevation that you will reach on this trek. Kanchenjunga Base Camp lies at an elevation of 5140m above and can be reached using a trail that leads along the edge of the glaciers. The trail is a mostly gradual path on grassy land, you need to be careful while walking on this trail as it is narrow and steep and some of the trail sections are prone to landslides. After a decent walk, you will reach the Base Camp and find yourself surrounded by beautiful snow-clad peaks and mountains. From Base Camp, you can see the Himalayan ranges of Mount Kanchenjunga, Nepal Peak, Dromo Peak, and Kirat Chuli. Khambachen. After spending some time at the base camp we will hike back to Lhonak.

DAY 14 Lhonak to Ghunsa (3415m) Hiking duration: 4 to 5 hours

You can retrace your footprints and memories while getting back to Ghunsa. Today you will be descending down overall with some ups and downs in between. After hiking for almost 5 hours you will reach Ghunsa. Check in to the lodge and have some rest. Later in the evening, you can explore the local village and its culture.

DAY 15 Ghunsa to Selele (4200 m) Hike duration: 4 to 5 hours

Your trail for today will be a bit steep and you need to walk gradually up from Ghunsa to Selele and pass through the dense forest of moss, rhododendron, and Juniper. If lucky, you will be able to see the national bird of Nepal; Danfe, an impedance Pheasant living in the jungle. Upon walking through the forest you will have a short break for lunch. After some decent walking, you will reach Selele. Check in the lodge and have a sound rest.

DAY 16 Selele to Tseram (3868m) Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

Your hike will be a strenuous one as you need to cross over three passes. Walk slowly and drink enough water to hydrate your body throughout the walk. Firstly, you will ascend the hill and once you reach the top, enjoy the beautiful view of the Jannu mountain. After reaching the top, you will slowly and gradually cross the Sinion La pass (4440 m), the Mirgin La pass (4480 m), and the Sinelapche La pass (4645 m). While crossing these passes, you will be accompanied by the Himalayan ranges on your east. After the passes, you will have a decent walk through the steep trail and finally, you will reach Tseram. Check-in to the lodge and have a good rest as you must be drained by today’s hike.

DAY 17Tseram to Ramche (4610m) Hiking duration: 4 hours

You will leave Tseram and head towards Ramche. Today, the trail will be a short one and it will be a decent walk up to the Ramche. On your way, you can view the magnificent views as you keep on ascending to the south of the Yalung Glaciers. During the trek, you can observe the frozen lakes, streams and crystals. Keep on hiking for a while to reach Ramche. Check in to the lodge and have a rest. Later on, you can explore the surroundings

DAY 18Visit Oktang Temple, Glacier and return to Ramche (4740m), Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

You will start your hike towards the Oktang temple. As you walk on the trail, your route will amaze you with the opening of beautiful vistas showing the natural scenery and beauty of Mount Kabru, Yalung Kang, Kanchenjunga, and Kumbakarna. The climber’s base camp on the north side of Kanchenjunga is another day across the glacier. So, Oktang is the logical high point that can be reached without climbing gear. Explore the temple area and enjoy the view, later on, you will descend all the way down to Ramche.

DAY 19Ramche to Tseram (3870m), Hiking duration: 6 hours

After breakfast, you will take approx.6 hours to trek back to Tseram. You will see the astounding view of the surrounding Himalayas throughout the trail. Now we are at the most exciting part of Kanchenjunga Trek. After reaching Tseram, check in to the lodge and have a rest.

DAY 20 Tseram to Lamite Bhanjyang (3370m). Hiking duration: 5 hours

Today will be an easy hike, down the trail through the dense rhododendron and pine forest. We will also have an opportunity of floating in the smells of natural herbs of the Kanchenjunga conservation area, throughout the jungle trekking. The trail descends steeply through the rhododendron forest to Torontan and then climbs up through the mossy forest to reach Lamite Bhanjyang, where we will be staying tonight.

DAY 21 Lamite Bhanjyang to Yamphudin (2080m). Hiking duration: 5 hours

Start your day with a steep descent to Imja Khola, and then cross along the Dubi Pass. Walking over the steep ridges and appreciating the beautiful surroundings will make forget the hardship of reaching Dhupi Bhanjyang (2540 meters). Then we will be walking through the dense forest and after some hours, we will come across the Clean Omje River to reach Yamphudin. As Yamphudin is a big settlement with the diverse ethnic groups such as Limbu, Gurung, Sherpa, and Rai. You will be witnessing the cross-cultural bindings over the smiley faces of the friendly locals. We will stay here tonight.

DAY 22Yamphudin to Phumpe (1780m). Hiking duration: 5 hours

Start your day with the trail that descends steeply to the Kabeli Khola River and crosses a long suspension bridge before reaching the village of Mamanke. Then climbs up steeply to Phumpe village for an overnight rest.

DAY 23Phumpe to Khunjari (1928m), Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

Get ready to head towards Khunjari, The trail climbs high to two tea shops on the ridge above the village, and then crosses through a series of valleys and past numerous villages. The route continues down to Bhanjyang and crosses a ridge to descend steeply to the Limbu village of Khunjari, where you will spend the night.

Day 24Trek to Suketar (1824 m) Hiking duration: 3 to 4 hours

You will head towards Suketar. This will be the last destination on your trek. Today, you will be descending down to Suketar through a lush green forest and while walking through the forest you can observe the flora and fauna along with the birds chirping in the forest. After some gradual walking, you will reach the saddle and from here you will again start to descend to Suketar. You will have your lunch just beyond the airstrip before walking for a while to finally reach Suketar.

Day 25Drive to Biratnagar and take a evening flight to Kathmandu (Driving duration 8 hours & Flight duration: 40mins)

Start your day early to take a bus from Suketar to Biratnagar. After reaching Biratnagar you will directly transfer to the airport and take an evening flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival at Kathmandu airport, our office representative will come to assist you and transfer you to the Asian Heritage office to share your trekking experience with our office team.

Day 26Departure

Your trip will come to an end today after breakfast. You will be advised and assisted with your onward travel arrangements and transfer to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport by our private van around 3 hours before your flight schedule and flight back to your home/other travel destination. Have a safe journey onwards.
