Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek – Kanchenjunga Mountain is the third-highest mountain in the world and it is one of the best trekking destinations for trekkers who love adventure and are daredevils. Kanchenjunga trekking routes have been hardly explored and remain one of the most isolated trekking regions in Nepal. 
 
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek goes through the villages Taplejung, Chhirwa, Sekathum, Gyabla, Ghunsa, Khambachen, Lhonak, Ghunsa, Selele, Tseram, Ramche, Torongten, Sherpa Gaun, Phumpe Dada, Kadebhanjyang, Lali Kharka and Suketar, from where you take a flight back to Kathmandu. During the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, you can see beautiful (panoramic) views of Mt. Kabru, Yalung Kang, Kanchanjunga, and Kumbakarna. Furthermore, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek takes you through the Sinion La Pass, the Mirgin La Pass, and the Sinelapche Pass.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome! to Kathmandu. Asian heritage awaits you at the Tribhuvan International Airport. On arrival, our Tour Manager/Asian Heritage representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal area to welcome you and transfer you to the hotel. Check in to your sumptuous room at the luxury 4-star Hotel Yatri Suites & Spa. Our representative will facilitate you and discuss your travel Itinerary. If you still have some time left, then in the evening you can stroll through the streets of Thamel.

Day 2 Flight from Kathmandu to Suketar

You will start your Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek with a 1-hour flight to reach Suketar. Upon arrival in Suketar, check in to the lodge and have some rest.

Day 3 Trek to Chhirwa (1185m/6 to 7 hours)

Your trail from Taplejung descends until it reaches Chhirwa. Today, the path will be taking you mostly downhill while passing the pastures land and small villages on your way. Your trek guide will indicate short breaks throughout the trek as today is a tough hiking day. Somewhere along the way, you will be having your lunch. Observe the hungdewa river and the raging Tamur River and after some gradual upward walking, you will start descending down to Sinwa village. From there, we continue to Tawa before crossing the suspension bridge at Thiwa. As you keep on walking you will realize the unfolding of nature’s vistas and after some gradual walk, you’ll reach today’s final destination Chhirwa. Chhirwa is a small Limbu village with some local lodges.

Day 4 Trek to Sekathum (1650m/5 to 6 hours)

You will start your trek through a few forested ridges with lush green vegetation. Today your path will be taking you through the side of the Tamur River until you arrive at the Olangchung Gola. This is the entry point of the Kanchenjunga national park and from here you will be ascending for a while before descending again to you cross Ghunsa Khola. After a decent half an hour’s walk, you will arrive in Sekathum where we will stay overnight.

Day 5Trek to Gyabla (2725m/8 to 9 hours)

Today you will head towards Gyabla. Have a decent walk and cross the river before you start to ascend the steep and narrow trail. After crossing it you will descend all the way down to cross the river again and then you will gradually walk up from the gorge’s bottom to pass by Solima and slowly descend down to the riverside. You need to hike carefully today as you will be walking through the gorge using a steep and narrow trail. Hike up for a while and leave the riverside behind to pass through dense bamboo, fir, and rhododendron forest. Then, you will pass a small stone house by the side of a river before gradually walking up over small bridges. Soon you will get to see the stunning waterfalls while walking all the way up to reach today’s destination Gyabla. It is a small Tibetan settlement.

Day 6 Trek to Ghunsa (3415m/6 to 7 hours)

You will start your trek to Ghunsa, at first you will descend down to the riverside and continue to walk gradually. Soon, the valley will slowly open up before you arrive at a place called Phole. After a couple of hours, you will reach the famous Sherpa village where you can observe the hydroelectric plant. Today you will be staying in Ghunsa as you need to acclimatize yourself.

Day 7 Rest in Ghunsa

Today is a rest day for you, it’s necessary to climatize with the surroundings in order to keep fit on the trails that follow. Have a short hike to the Buddhist monastery and explore the surroundings, you can hike towards the Lapsan La through lush green forest and then get back to Ghunsa and have some rest.

Day 8 Trek to Khambachen (4145m/5 to 6 hours)

Start your trek towards Khambachen. After a gradual walk along the riverside, you will start to ascend through the highland trees and vegetation, cross the bridge at Rampuk Kharka and continue your hike passing the waterfall. Get ready to cross the narrow and steep section of the landslide area to be welcomed by the views of Jannu. After some more trekking, you’ll reach Khambachen, where you can check in to the lodge and rest.

Day 9 Trek to Lhonak (4792m/3 to 4 hours)

Today your trail will lead you through rocky fields and many impressive boulders can be seen on the hillside. The trek follows the river bank and soon you will reach another magnificent waterfall. Walkthrough the waterfall area and cross the bridge to Ramtang, the upcoming path is a bit steep and narrow due to the landslide so be careful while using this trail. After this tough but beautiful trail, we will reach Lhonak.

Day 10 Hike to Kanchanjunga Base Camp (5140m) and back to Lhonak (7 to 8 hours)

Kanchenjunga Base Camp lies at an elevation of 5140m above and can be reached using a trail that leads along the edge of the glaciers. The trail is a mostly gradual path on grassy land, you need to be careful while walking on this trail as it is narrow and steep and some of the trail sections are prone to landslides. After a decent walk, you will reach the Base Camp and find yourself surrounded by beautiful snow-clad peaks and mountains. From Base Camp, you can see the Himalayan ranges of Mount Kanchenjunga, Nepal Peak, Dromo Peak, and Kirat Chuli. Kangbachen. After spending some time at the base camp we will hike back to Lhonak

Day 11 Trek to Ghunsa (3415m/4 to 5 hours)

You can retrace your footprints and memories while getting back to Ghunsa. After hiking for almost 5 hours, you will reach Ghunsa. Check in to the lodge and have some rest. Later in the evening, you can explore the local village and its culture.

Day 12 Trek to Selele (4200m/4 to 5 hours)

Your trail for today will be a bit steep and you need to walk gradually up from Ghunsa to Selele and pass through the dense forest of moss, rhododendron, and Juniper. If lucky, you will be able to see the national bird of Nepal; Danfe, an impedance Pheasant living in the jungle. Upon walking through the forest you will have a short break for lunch. After some decent walking, you will reach Selele. Check-in at the lodge and have a sound rest.

DAY 13 Selele to Tseram (3868m/6 to 7 hours)

Your hike will be a strenuous one as you need to cross over three passes. Walk slowly and drink enough water to hydrate your body throughout the walk. Firstly, you will ascend the hill and once you reach the top, enjoy the beautiful view of the Jannu mountain. After reaching the top, you will slowly and gradually cross the Sinion La Pass (4440 m), the Mirgin La Pass (4480 m), the Himalayan, and the Sinelapche La Pass (4645 m). While crossing these passes, you will be accompanied by the Himalayan ranges on your east. After the passes, you will have a decent walk through the steep trail and finally, you will reach Tseram. Check in to the lodge and have a good rest as you must be drained by today’s hike.

DAY 14 Trek to Ramche (4610m/ 4 hours)

You will leave Tseram and head towards Ramche. Today, the trail will be a short one and it will be a decent walk up to the Ramche. On your way, you can view the magnificent views as you keep on ascending to the south of the Yalung Glaciers. During the trek, you can observe frozen lakes, streams, and crystals. Keep on hiking for a while to reach Ramche. Check in to the lodge and have a rest. Later on, you can explore the surroundings.

DAY 15 Visit Oktang Temple, Glacier and return to Ramche (4740m/6 to 7 hours)

You will start your hike toward the Oktang temple. As you walk on the trail, your route will amaze you with the opening of beautiful vistas showing the natural scenery and beauty of Mount Kabru, Yalung Kang, Kanchanjunga, and Kumbakarna. The climber’s base camp on the north side of Kanchenjunga is another day across the glacier. So, Oktang is the logical high point that can be reached without climbing gear. Explore the temple area and enjoy the view, later on, you will descend all the way down to Ramche.

DAY 16 Trek to Torongten (2980m/4 hours)

You will head towards Torongten, it will take you a couple of hours to walk back down the valley to Tseram. From here you will continue walking down the valley beside the Simbuwa Khola to reach Torongten. Today, your path will take you through the jungle, providing you shade and making you feel cold, some of the sections of the trail are close to the river bed. There are three tea houses in Torongten perched above the river and there are some nice terraces for camping as well. After reaching Torongten, check in at the lodge and have a rest. Later on, you can explore the Torongten surroundings.

DAY 17Trek to Sherpa Gaun (1792m/7 to 8 hours)

You will ascend up until you reach the Lashetham, which is at an elevation of 3646 m. From here, you can view the beautiful picturesque hills along with the panoramic views of the Himalayas. Later on, you will again start to descend to your next destination; Sherpa Gaun. Today, you can see and feel the huge difference in terms of altitude since you will be descending from 3646 m all the way down to 1792 m. The trail will take you down through a rhododendron and fir forest until you reach Sherpa Gaun, after reaching Sherpa Gaun you can check in to the lodge. Have a sound rest or explore the village.

DAY 18Trek to Phumpe dada (1860m/6 to 7 hours)

You will start your hike towards Phumpe Dada. While exploring lots of things on the way, your trail will take you through the pasture lands with lots of twists and turns in it. Enjoy the beautiful hills ranging far to your east. After some decent hiking, you will reach Phumpe Danda, check in to the lodge, and have some rest.

DAY 19Trek to Kande Bhanjyang (2190m/6 to 7 hours)

Get ready to head towards Kadebhanjyang, it’s a pretty long day to hike since you’ll be ascending mostly until you reach today’s destination. After a gradual walk up you will reach Phung Phung Danda and later on Keshuwa. After crossing Keshuwa, you will finally reach the saddle of the ridge, Kande Bhanjyang. This trail will provide you the opportunity to explore the rich culture, tradition, and lifestyle of the native Limbu people. Explore the untouched natural landscape from Kande Bhanjyang and it will be a treat you with the magnificent panoramic views of Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna mountain, and the Kabru ridge.

DAY 20 Trek to Lali kharka (2266m/5 to 6 hours)

Today you will trek to Lali Kharka.

DAY 21 Trek to Suketar (1824m/3 to 4 hours)

You will head towards Suketar. This will be the last destination on your trek and tomorrow you will be flying back to Kathmandu. Today, you will be descending to Suketar through a lush green forest and while walking through the forest you can observe the flora and fauna along with the birds chirping in the forest. After some gradual walking, you will reach the saddle and from here you will again start to descend to Suketar. You will have your lunch just beyond the airstrip before walking for a while to finally reach Suketar.

DAY 22Fly Back to Kathmandu Flight (40mins)

Pack your bags and prepare for the flight back to Kathmandu. Try to make sure to get a left-hand side seat in the plane since the left side offers some majestic views of the mountains covered in snow. Upon arrival at Kathmandu airport, our office representative will come to assist you and transfer you to the hotel. Check in to the hotel and have some rest for a while, later on, you can come to the Asian Heritage office to share your trekking experience with our office team. After, you can stroll around the local streets of Thamel and visit the nearby sights. In Thamel, you can shop for souvenirs, handicrafts, or tokes of love for your loved ones. In the evening, pack your luggage and bags as today will be your last day for you in Nepal.

DAY 23Departure

Your trip will come to an end today after breakfast. You will be advised and assisted with your onward travel arrangements and transfer to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport by our private van around 3 hours before your flight schedule and flight back to your home/other travel destination. Have a safe journey onwards.
